President’s Message

I’d like to wish you all a Very Happy New Year and all the Best in 2013!

This past year saw a revamp of MSABC website and the addition of a suite of social media tools to help us better communicate.  A big thank you to Board members Susan Simmons & John McManus for all of their hard work in putting it together!   The web site has been updated with a new look and is now easier to navigate.  We’ve added three new communication tools: a ‘blog’ (that will replace our Bulletin), Facebook and Twitter. We strongly encourage you to use all of these tools.  Links can be found at the top right hand corner of the MSABC website.

MSABC News via the Blog/Bulletin will be up to date. If your team has any swimming news to share, be it  a team story, a story of personal perseverance, a sad story or a happy story, please send them to webmaster@msabc.ca and they will be added to our blog/bulletin right away for all of our membership to read!

Facebook will help connect our membership as well – hey! Forget your favourite towel at the last swim meet?  Maybe someone picked it up? Send a note out on FB and maybe that towel will find its way back to you!

Give us something to tweet about! Have an upcoming event you would like us to mention? Is one of your club members new to swim meets? Swam a personal best or maybe broken a record? Tell us and we’ll tweet it out to the world!

The more involved you are the more informed all of our membership will be.  So please, get started and get involved!

MSABC League TrophyThis past year also saw the creation of separate League Trophy categories: Large Team (70 + members) and Medium Team (69 & less members). Victoria Masters won the Large Team category and the Windskill Otters took home the Medium Team award.  Congratulations to both teams!

To encourage more participation and level the swim lanes, this year we will add a third category – Small Team (1-29 members). Medium Teams will now be 30-69 members and Large Team will remain at 70+.  Team numbers are determined based on the preceding year’s final membership tally.  The current top 5 teams in each category are posted to the MSABC website with standings updated after each League meet.

The battles have begun! English Bay and Victoria Masters are currently swimming it out for first place in the large team category and North Shore, Windskill and White Rock all within touching distance of one another for the medium team trophy. Hyde Creek and Semiahmoo are within arm’s length of each other – but there are no guarantees. ANY team can easily catch up and pass their rivals by added a few swimmers and few relays to the remaining 3 swim meets (Victoria, Vernon & English Bay).

You have 3 more chances to add to your team’s final points and bring home the League Trophy!

Vancouver here we come! Hosted by the age-group Canadian Dolphin Swim Club, this year’s Provincial Masters Swimming Championships will be held at the Vancouver Aquatic Centre, downtown Vancouver, the last weekend in April.  The Dolphins partnership with Masters Swimming is an exciting one and we look forward to a well-run, exciting 3 days of competition!

Registration will open soon so make sure you are a member of our Facebook page so you don’t miss the advanced notice. This year’s Awards Banquet will be held at Vancouver Community College‘s downtown campus. As with past years, MSABC is covering a healthy portion of the banquet costs in order to keep your ticket prices low. Guests will be limited to 150 so be sure to sign up early.  Great food, fun music, and good friends – it’s a fantastic way to celebrate your achievements!

Speaking of achievements, please send in your nominations for the Ted Simpson & Stan Powell Awards.  A description of each can be found on the web site here.  Input from the membership for awarding these two trophies is VERY important so we hope that you will take the time to send in nominations for one or both.

In closing, I would like to send a huge thank-you to my seven Board members who continue to make my job a joy to fulfil and so rewarding to perform!  And to the membership – through Masters Swimming, may you continue to discover fun, friendship and fitness for life!
