President’s messagePosted: October 14, 2013
To those swimmers renewing their membership, I say ‘Welcome back to a new MSABC swim season!’ and to those of you who are joining for the very first time, I say ‘Welcome to good health & fitness, friendships & camaraderie and a venue where, if you’re so inclined, you can set goals and surprise yourself!’
MSABC is one of, if not, the oldest organised Masters Swimming Associations in Canada and we are proud to be held up as a positive example of ‘how to’ for other Master groups! We have been blessed to have had a long string of dedicated volunteers, passionate to their sport, to guide MSABC from its inception in the late 80’s to the present and I would therefore like to present you our current Board members:
Gilles Beaudin (President) – English Bay Swim Club
John McManus (Vice-President) – Navy Masters Swim Team
Nancy Ryan (Secretary) – Nanaimo Ebbtides
Keith Kendall (Treasurer) – Victoria Masters Swim Club
Len Martel (Registrar) – Victoria Masters Swim Club
Susan Simmons (Editor) – Victoria Masters Swim Club
Glen Mehus (Director) – Wine Country Masters Swim Club
Rod Carmichael (Director) – Victoria Masters Swim Club
Mike Dowling (Director) – North Shore Masters
It’s great that we have the Island, the Lower Mainland and the Okanagan represented and it’s this diversity that makes our Board that much stronger and that much more representative of our membership. If you see a Board member on the pool deck, whether at practice or at a meet or on the street, please take a moment to thank him or her for all the long hours they put in on behalf of you – the swimmer. The strength of any Association is in its membership and we try each year to get ‘new blood’ on to the Board so, if you’re so inclined, please let us know as positions do become available each year and are voted on at our Annual AGM.
Last year saw a ‘make over’ of our web site along with the launching of our this Blog (replacing the Bulletin), Facebook & Twitter accounts. If you haven’t already done so, please sign up today to one or all three as there’s no better way to keep up to date with all that is happening in & around MSABC.
Last year also saw the introduction of MSABC’s first ever Open Water Swimming Championships held in late July in conjunction with the Thetis Lake Swim for MS. It was a great success and we look forward to its growth in the years ahead!
For those of you chomping at the bit to compete, we already have a half dozen sanctioned meets spread throughout the year from October to March leading up to our Provincial Swimming Championships to be held in Kelowna at the end of April. For the true ‘keeners’, there are also Nationals in Windsor ON and FINA Worlds in Montreal. For more info, please check out our web site.
For those of you who just swim for the health & fitness – and you make up the bulk of our membership – I hope this aquatic season continues to put a jump in your step and a smile on your face!
